I have my grandma’s tartan plaid midi skirt chillin in my closet, and this post just gave me the styling confidence I needed to actually wear it. THANKS!
I have tartan and plaid skirts, but whoa the poncho and VW bolero scarf you linked have unlocked a new DIY dream in my mind... Find me studying geometry to reverse engineer these shapes. 🤓
I am not even joking I told my husband two nights ago I wanted to write about tartan. I LOVE!!!! You did a far better job than I could have imagined so thank you for your service and this absolutely glorious deep dive. Making the Scot’s so proud 🏴🤍
I love it! I snapped a picture of a very chic woman in the park yesterday morning who also serendipitously got the memo and had on an oversized tartan (very chic) dress
I have secretly loved plaid and have always dreamed of wearing a midi skirt because I agree with you that a miniskirt looks like you are going to school. Plus, that was my uniform back in Colombia. I went to a British school, so it brings back some memories, ha! But because I'm petite, I can't seem to find a good midi length that doesn't look like a conservative, culty, religious woman, lol. I'm checking out the ones you shared! Great great posts
Two thoughts! Mine is 29" long (I'm 5'1) and I've found it to be short enough to wear with flatter shoes, but still great for a tall boot. You could go more kilt length though (aka hit right at the bottom of the knee) and that may feel more balanced to you. (Allison posted a great example: https://substack.com/@allisontakecare/note/c-350251428?)
Was trying to *wrap* my head around what to wear for Christmas photos - must’ve manifested this post from you. Just ordered the first #2, and currently resisting the urge to buy the Pradas. Lysm!!!!
My dad has recently gone down the rabbit hole of our family tartan and wants a kilt for Christmas - now I'm taking it upon myself to get everyone tartan skirts for the holiday season
Love this so much! I *should* wear my mom’s side of the family’s Clan Graham tartan, but I am drawn to the reds and greys more than the sober blue, green and white. Although at this point I likely have no more claim to Clan Graham than your average person on the street, so I should prob just wear what I like! Great research and I love all the links!
I just took a look at Graham tartan and I think it would work really well with red!! Primary color paletting is very much in (always in my book fwiw), and the thin white against navy/greens helps make a crazy color pairing feel less stark of a jump imo 🫡
To add on an additional interesting note about tartan - most families/clans would have a few tartan, intended for different purposes such as formal dress vs every day wear.
Love love love this!! I have a collection of kilts bought from eBay that I lend out for my church’s Scottish Sunday. I need to work them into my regular wardrobe.

Even better! Here to help if you need
Some great inspiration is Claudia Winkleman’s outfits for the Traitors. Some very high end but total Scottish Goth vibe.
Wow, yes! Amazing

Figuring out the pattern for the VW bolero would be a feat (but rewarding!!)

Honored to have the stamp of approval!!!! (So funny I even ended it saying to go steal from your partner. Telepathy!!)
Mad for plaid!
I love plaid- it’s been a staple for me for my entire life. So fun to see all these, thank you!💕
Found a bolt of wool woven tartan in Stewart dress and spent all day making an oversized dress from it ( £4) in a charity shop

Saw her picture and her post sharing your post, and run to read it.
Love how contemporary styling is taking ‘80s preppy out of plaid. Thank you for the great intel on tartan and plaid and all the deep fall picks!

Great minds think alike, I wore my Black Watch tartan skirt for ours last year :)

I sense a theme to what you gift everyone….
Every retailer is about to be completely sold out of Boyd tartan plaids
